About

Artist Statement

Mosaics are like painting with glass or tile. The placement of each “brushstroke,” or individual piece, gives me an opportunity to catch the light in a different way—to add dimension and reflection not achievable using paint alone. The trick, of course, is figuring out how to best take advantage of the qualities of luminosity to create a whole that is better than the sum of the parts.

I enjoy working with a wide range of materials: smalti, stained glass, dichroic glass, mirror, glass fusings, tiles, beads, ceramic materials, metals, and more. I appreciate that mosaics offer endless directions for growth and exploration with different shapes, substrates, colors, and textures—and that mosaics can be functional as well as artful.

Formerly a ceramic artist, I moved into the mosaic realm in 2006. In 2009, I became a Resident Artist at the Institute of Mosaic Art in Oakland, and am now an instructor at the institute’s new location in Berkeley. I have a keen interest in the social aspects of creativity and a strong belief in the power of art to heal and bring people together. To that end, I enjoy leading and collaborating on community and team-building mosaic projects.
